A Patient from American Use Skulls Made by 3D Printing Instead of 75% Personal Skulls

According to the news reported by the medium abroad, a patient from American had got an open surgery successfully, which operation had used skulls made by 3D printing instead of 75% personal skulls. The researchers from Oxford Performance Materials Inc.(OPM) said that they wish to use implantation materials made by 3D printing instead of patients’ deficiencies.

During the manufacturing process, firstly, researchers will scan patient’s head, then, they will print the skull for implantation through 3D printing technology. The researchers said that the skull they printed can replace some damaged skulls caused by disease or trauma.

The CEO of OPM said, “We believed that it is a platform with revolutionary and creativity, and it will play a key role in all aspects of orthopaedic. We are permitted on the area of skull implanting for the first time, due to the big demand. And it is just a beginning. We will pay our attention to the research and development of 3D printing bones from other aspects on body, and decrease the cost for patients and other medical service providers.” OPM has put its hand to sale implants made by 3D printing overseas. In American, Food and Drug Administration only allow the OPM’s implants to be used in surgery.

In the process of preparation for transplantation, scientists will scan patient’s head and get the digital scan model of skull, and then, they will print the skull layer-by-layer with 3D printer. It is reported that the material they used for printing is polyether ketone, and the customized implant can be done in two weeks. At present, the OPM is ready to submit the application about other 3D printing bones to FDA, and they hope they can get the green light.
